Merry Cryptid-Mas! Part 2: Mothman

Center: A large black and white image of Mothman surounded by black speckles. They are wearing a santa hat and beard and their eyes are glowing red. On his right side it says "Pros: Flies under their own power; Festive red eyes; and Might warn of impending danger (or naughty-list status). On its right is an image of Mothman with a Santa sack flying to a snowy house. Below Mothman on the right it says "Cons: May get distracted by pretty lights and not finish route; Might steal your dog" On the bottom left, an image of Mothman, arms outstretched, admiring a glowing Christmas tree with a sack behind him wiggling and saying "woof?"

As a reminder, Cryptid-mas is a yearly episode where I weigh the pros and cons of various cryptids taking the role of Santa Claus. Or, if you’re my kid, this is Daddy Black Butterfly, aka Boom-boom-boom. I was intrigued to learn more about Mothman researching for this. That being said, no one really described his arms so I made a guess/gave him moth-feelers for fingers. (Also honestly Mothman seems to have bird wings more than moth wings but I made some adjustments for my own aesthetics.)

    1. Much like Nessie, Mothman may be in stories but originated in folklore. More recent folklore than the Loch Ness Monster enjoys, granted. People say they saw this or that on a dark night, people say there were more sightings right up until a bridge collapsed, people say it was just sandhill cranes or gasses. The tales originated in the mountains in West Virginia.

I’m not an expert though; I knew somewhat of him then searched for more. This was a good overall article that I found: https://folklife.si.edu/magazine/mothman-point-pleasant-west-virginia
